KREM 2 has teamed up with Sterling Bank, Triple Play Family Fun Park and Rachel’s Challenge to create a “Hero of the Month” contest. KREM 2 is currently not accepting new entries, but will be accepting new entries starting on September 2, 2013.

Rachel’s Challenge is a kindess campaign to reduce bullying in our schools. The Rachel’s Challenge campaign was created after a young girl (Rachel Scott) was shot and killed in the Columbine High School shooting more than 12 years ago. The Rachel’s Challenge program was inspired by an essay Rachel wrote before she died. Rachel titled her essay, “My Ethics, My Codes of Life”. In it she wrote the following: “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindesss can go.”

Rachel’s dad says in that essay, “she challenged her reader to start a chain reaction of kindess and compassion that would ripple around the world.” Following her death, people kept asking Rachel's family to talk about Rachel's life. The chain reaction Rachel envisioned finally emerged. Her acts of kindness coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the basis of Rachel's Challenge. Many consider it a life-changing school program.

More than 15 million people have seen the Rachel's Challenge Program making it the largest training and assembly program in the United States. Schools report the pro-kindness program drastically cuts down on bullying and increases attendance. More than 12 years after her death, Rachel's chain reaction of compassion is alive leaving an indelible impression on so many lives.

Through this contest we will recognize and honor people spreading kindness and compassion in hopes of starting a chain reaction.
